Perth golf day to raise money for 6000 kilometre rowing race
Matt Hort has never been to Mauritius but he decided to row 6000 kilometres to get there.
The Western Australian entrant in a 6000-kilometre rowing race has announced a corporate golf day at Burswood Park on 25 November to raise money for his team and for charity.
The Indian Ocean Race in April 2009 will be the first rowing race across the Indian Ocean from Australia.
Over 25 international rowing teams and three Australian teams will leave Geraldton for Mauritius, daring hell on the high seas to reach tropical paradise.
Go West, WA’s only team, was formed by four members of the West Australia Rowing Club determined to “beat the Poms across our ocean” and raise funds for Surf Life Saving West Australia as they row.
Funds raised at the Mauritius Golf Classic will go to Surf Life Saving West Australia and the Go West rowing bid. Mauritius is a golfers’ paradise and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority has come on board to help promote Go West by sponsoring the charity golf day at Burswood Park Golf Club.
The Mauritius Golf Classic has already attracted strong interest from the Oil and Gas, Mining, Construction, Law and Finance sectors.
Go West team leader, 193-centimetre, Matt Hort, said all team members would row 12 hours a day and hoped to reach Mauritius in a nine-metre rowboat in just 47 days. “In foul weather the lads will be packed into the cabin like sardines.”
The 2009 Indian Ocean Race is run by Woodvale Races who organise the world’s toughest rowing events across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Mauritius, a tropical paradise west of Australia, will be one of the rewards for the rowers.
