Major ministerial delegation from Mauritius visits Australia this month

The deputy prime minister of Mauritius will lead the largest delegation ever to visit Australia to promote Mauritius as an unrivalled travel destination.

The delegation will host luncheons and media briefings and introduce travel trade shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth the 26th, 27th and 29th May.

Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, offers much more than other tropical destinations because of its colourful history and its beauty. Mauritius has a sophisticated and diverse culture with French, English, Indian, Creole and Malay influences. The island offers a huge range of world-class sports, health spas, activities and resorts. With French influences, the cuisine is superb and the azure lagoons and white sand beaches are second to none.

Many Australians are just beginning to discover the delights of this tropical gem in the Indian Ocean and the visit provides a major opportunity for the travel industry in Australia to get to know the country and its tourism providers.

Arrivals from Australia are up 60 per cent in the last four years and Air Mauritius has more than trebled the number of direct flight seats from Australia to Mauritius in the last 12 months.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Xavier Luc Duval, Minister of Tourism and External Communications, Republic of Mauritius, will be accompanied by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Maxis Simonet, the chairman and the director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority and the CEO of Air Mauritius, Mr.Manoj R K Ujoodha. Representatives of major hotel chains and tourism service providers in Mauritius will accompany these official delegates.

“This is the largest delegation Mauritius has ever sent to Australia and an incredible opportunity to learn about what Mauritius offers to Australian travellers and travel operators,” says Greg Wren, Australian agent for the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. “ We have 15 businesses coming from Mauritius and together with the 10 partners in Australia, this will be a significant occasion for business development”.

The visit is an acknowledgement of the growth in Australian travel to Mauritius and the closeness of the two countries. Mauritius neighbours Australia, just eight hours flight to the west across the Indian Ocean, and half way to Europe.
