Mauritius is better for ocean sports than Southeast Asia or Pacific islands. We believe several things make Mauritius, to the west of Australia, a better place for ocean sports than tropical islands in Southeast Asia or the Pacific Ocean. Firstly, Mauritius has world class diving, fishing, sailing, kite boarding and surfing all on the one island. The beaches on mainland Mauritius all have white sand and run alongside a wide, sheltered and sparkling lagoon. You don’t have to go to off shore islands to have idyllic beaches and clean, azure water in Mauritius. The perimeter reef is about 500 metres wide and one to two metres deep depending on tide. This makes the lagoon ideal for water sports. It also means the waves and the ocean are never too far away. Consistent winds, wide passes and deep ocean drop offs mean better fishing, windsurfing and surfing. Mauritius and nearby islands hold world records for several game fish including the largest blue marlin, the largest skipjack tuna and the largest mako ever caught on rod and reel. Several blue marlin over 1000 pounds are caught every year. The Marlin World Cup and Southern Indian Ocean Billfish Competitions in February are hotly contested by teams from around the world. There are some 50 game fishing charter boats on the island. Surfing on the south and west coasts features several hollow breaks at passes in the reef. Tamarin Bay is a world-class and famous left hand wave. The pass at Le Morne point collects constant south-easterly trade winds for kitesurfing and kiteboarding. Club Mistral – the international surf, wind and kitesurfing operation – has a centre at Le Morne that is regularly visited by the world’s best kiteboarders. There are as many things to do underwater as above the water in Mauritius There are 46 diving centres on the Blue Map to Mauritius because the standard of diving is so high. Underwater canyons, chimneys, corals castles, towers, shipwrecks and massive drop offs with underwater cliffs are home to colourful marine life like nowhere in the world. For beginners, there is an equally large range of activities including snorkelling, submarine tours, semi-submersible tours, subscooters for two, and undersea walks in special diving helmets. Undersea wonders for all the family. Most resorts provide free equipment and lessons by experienced instructors for water skiing, wakeboarding, catamarans, snorkelling, diving and fishing on the lagoon. The latest equipment from Europe can be hired for more extreme sports lovers. Last but not least, all these ocean sports and activities can be enjoyed all year round on one island. Mauritius has perfect beaches, consistent winds and waves and abundant marine life. South-east trade winds are consistent most afternoons and blow off shore on the north and west coasts nearly every day.
